AÇEV
Founded in 1993, The Mother Child Education Foundation (AÇEV), has been working to increase public awareness about the importance of early childhood education and implement various training programs that directly speak to their cause.
AÇEV's mission is to make a lasting contribution to society and to improve the quality of individual's lives through education. In its two main areas of expertise, early childhood and adult education, AÇEV develops and implements various training programs and projects.
AÇEV is guided by three fundamental beliefs:
- equal opportunity in education for all,
- learning is a lifelong process that must begin in early childhood, and
- the child as well as his/her immediate caregivers must be educated and supported.
By the end of 2006, AÇEV had reached 400,000 mothers, fathers and children in each of Turkey’s 81 Provinces.
In July 2004, the Turkish Ministry of Education passed a regulation stating all primary schools should be equipped with preschool classes and have an assigned preschool teacher trained to teach 5-6 year old children . While this is a major step in terms of the development of preschool programs in the country, the supply side funding commitments for these preschool classes have not been fully met and many of these schools suffer from lack of resources to furnish the preschool classes as well as deliver content that is necessary. ACEV has been collaborating with the Ministry of Education in providing preschool classes all around Turkey with the necessary infrastructure as well as providing preschool class teachers with scientifically developed educational content.
"Summer School Head Start" is a 10-week accelerated "Preschool Education Program" for children in the Southeastern region of Turkey. The objective of the program is to prepare 5 and 6 year-olds in Southeastern Turkey for entering school that fall by supporting their language skills and cognitive development, thereby making their first few years of elementary education more effective. As part of the program, participating children's mothers are also provided with complementary "mother support" training. This program begins in June 2008 and will reach 600 children and 450 mothers (in 30 classes).
Treehouse is working with AÇEV on this important endeavor. We have identified 15 categories of cross-over products that are sold in our store where something similar is also needed to furnish the preschools in this program. Therefore, for every one of these 15 cross-over products that treehouse sells, we will be donating the funds to AÇEV to purchase a necessary piece of equipment for the designated preschools.
